My research has developed along two complementary trajectories, both of which have found important international recognition (significant grants, invitations to present at international conferences, articles in peer-reviewed academic journals).
The first trajectory reconstructs the institutional and cultural politics through which the Catholic Church controlled and exploited cinema throughout the previous century; the second analyses the role played by cinema in the redefinition of gender identity, and in the management of cultural conflicts surrounding the issue of sexuality in Italy, between the 1940s and ’70s.
Interpreted together, these two avenues of research – and in particular the work funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research – delineate a historiographic building site for the themes of power and identity (especially as regards religious and gender identities).
From this perspective, my research has consistently studied the role played by the media in activating and negotiating normative discourses in individual experiences. The challenge that I have set myself is to integrate analyses of institutional power and cultural influence, and their respective scholarly traditions (history of institutions on the one hand, and cultural history on the other) into a single, experimental model, through the lens of film history. The nexus that connects the various research projects that I have coordinated and completed over the past few years is therefore the motif of “cinema as a historical agent”, that is, as a tool that (in its own, unique way) has mediated the “historical apparatuses of power that form identities”.
